This is a piece of writing by a young woman who has spent the last two years incarcerated.
I asked her to write about a dream she has:
A dream…
I ask, what does it mean?
You want a story,
Well I’ll tell you this, I’m sorry
But its never a happy ending
Because my brain still needs mending… but.. here it goes
Once upon a time there was a girl who lived in the drug world,
She thought this was normal
Packing a gat is what they call formal
Stuck on drugs and led by violence
She was taught no compliance- be emotionless , show no mercy
Despite her life, she had a dream
Her inner child just wanted to beam
Get out of the hood and be the intelligent girl she know she could
Go to school, ditch the fools
Become a nurse, break the hoods curse
When this is all done, She was able to have fun
From this long journey of her life-
Finding that she has become a woman inside
Never regretting the bumpy ride.
- Staying strong, no more wrong…

Over the last few weeks I has been working out at the BYCC on a Passion Project with a small group of young women who are in residents for a long enough time to complete the project.
Each girl brings such a diverse energy, spirit, and challenge.
This week they did something that I asked if I could share with others… Their Community Hero’s
The girls were asked to brainstorm about community, develop community rules that would enhance their community and then create an imaginary community hero that would possess all the skills and characters that could run this community…
Here is what three of them came up with
What continuously amazes me is that regardless how challenging a girl’s past or behaviour is their ability to tap into their inner self is always renewing.

Well thanks to Linda Solomon, Publisher of the Vancouver Observer our ED Loretta Cella we will have a regular column about the work we are doing to assist young women to stand tall.
Check out our first blog post
We mean serious business! We set a goal… And we will achieve it! And we need you, the community, to help us out.
There are a couple ways we could really use your help right now:
1) Spread the good word… Passion is out there!
2) If you know a young woman in your life or are a young woman who is feeling challenged and disconnected get support, get connected to resources, and contact us.
3) With a small monthly donation that can be made on this site you can offer an opportunity for a girl or a group of girls in your community to experience a life enhancing opportunity by being part of a passion project.
